Field guide

From your signals to the light.

How to connect each page, what each status means, and what is measured or inferred.

Where this stands

Endless Cockpit and Biofeedback Path Cockpit were tested in Chrome on a Mac with simulated Bluetooth sensors that send real packet bytes. No real cadence sensor or heart-rate strap has been connected to either yet. Autonomic Telemetry has its own field guide.

Endless Cockpit

Endless Cockpit takes its speed from your cadence. Connect a Bluetooth cadence sensor or smart trainer from the Connect sheet, hold Space or the Hold to pedal button, or set a steady cadence. Each crank revolution sends a ring of light down the road, and the road's grade changes your speed by up to 40%.

The sensor's status reads not connected, no Bluetooth in this browser, none chosen, connected with no cadence yet, live, or disconnected. Some sensors send nothing until the crank turns.

Biofeedback Path Cockpit

A Bluetooth heart-rate strap paints the weather, and a cadence sensor or smart trainer sets the speed, straight from Chrome or Edge with no helper app. A strap that reports beat intervals adds RMSSD and SDNN. A rate-only sensor, such as the Hume Band, gives an explicitly limited estimate. Muse needs Autonomic's Mac bridge and is not read here. The desktop app's window cannot show the Bluetooth list, so connect from a browser.

Watch: the inferred index, Autonomic Telemetry's own model, makes the gas cloud wider, brighter and warmer. It needs 120 seconds of quiet data first, and it waits while you pedal. Ride: heart rate above your baseline adds up to 4.5% of apparent grade, shown apart from the road's grade. Train: follow the ring, and how far your heart rate swings with it lifts the fog. Hold it for a minute and dawn breaks.

Each sensor says whether it is not connected, waiting for you to choose, refused, missing, connected with no reading, live, or disconnected. Inferred values are never measured, and none of it is medical. It is not therapy.

Autonomic Telemetry

A labeled synthetic demo runs in any browser. Live heart, pulse and brain signals reach it through a small bridge that runs on a Mac and handles Bluetooth, and an iPhone on the same Wi-Fi can show the picture. Its field guide covers the setup, the estimate and its limits.

Browsers

BrowserBluetooth sensors in the cockpitsThe demos
Chrome, EdgeYes, on a computer, after you choose the sensor in the browser's listYes
FirefoxNo. Firefox has no Web BluetoothYes
SafariNo. Safari has no Web BluetoothYes

Only Chrome has been tested so far. Web Bluetooth needs a secure page, which the published pages are.

What the status means

AmbientNothing is connected. The picture is idling, not responding to anything.
Refused or missingThe browser or the system refused, or no sensor was chosen. The Connect sheet says which.
Connected, no readingThe sensor is connected and nothing is arriving yet. Turn the crank, or wet a strap's contacts and put it on.
LiveReadings are arriving. The label shows the value.
DemoA synthetic ride or body, not yours. The label stays up as long as it runs.
ReplayA file you loaded. Nothing in it is live.

Safety and privacy

A limiter slows any large change in brightness, and the cockpits measure under the WCAG limit of three flashes a second, even in each page's hardest tested case. That is a measured screen, not a medical guarantee. If flashing or moving light affects you, take care, and turn on your system's reduced-motion setting, which tightens the limiter and calms the camera.

In the cockpits, readings are handled in your browser and never sent anywhere. A session file holds your readings over time, such as cadence or heart rate, and stays on your computer unless you share it. No page here is a medical device.

Credits

No outside code is included, apart from Autonomic Telemetry's own engine, which Biofeedback Path Cockpit carries under the same license. Ideas came from these projects:

  • Butterchurn (MIT): Milkdrop's feedback warp, behind the road's trails.
  • j2208-band-tools (MIT): the Hume Band's commands, through Autonomic's bridge.
