Food Desert Oases
Nearest places
One list, nearest first, by straight-line distance from the searched point. For free food, press Food banks and meals or dial 2-1-1. Stores are those authorized to accept SNAP, and many are convenience stores, gas stations or dollar stores: press Grocery and supermarkets for groceries. This list has only the farmers markets authorized to accept SNAP; press Farmers markets to add the rest of USDA's directory, many of them seasonal.

Area status: USDA Food Access Research Atlas
Search for a place to see how the Atlas classifies its census tract.
What it measures: straight-line distance to the nearest SNAP-authorized store of any type except farmers markets, including convenience stores and gas stations. USDA also publishes a second measure, shown below, that counts only supermarkets, supercenters and large grocery stores. It describes the whole census tract, not any one household. Distances are straight-line, not travel distance. The Atlas covers the 50 states and DC only.
Supermarket measure: 2019 data (supermarkets, supercenters and large grocery stores, 2010 census tracts)

Source status
Each source is checked on its own. A source that fails is marked unavailable; it never counts as zero.

What this does not cover
- No complete national food pantry list. No complete, open national list of food pantries was found that this page can use. Pantries and meal programs appear here only where volunteers have tagged them in OpenStreetMap, so many are missing. For a full local list, dial 2-1-1 (or visit 211.org) or contact your regional food bank, which you can find with the Feeding America food bank locator.
- SNAP authorization only. The SNAP retailer list shows that a store is authorized to accept SNAP. It does not show hours, stock or prices.
- Farmers markets come from two USDA lists. SNAP-authorized markets and farmers are current and appear in the main list. USDA's full farmers market directory is a dated copy kept on this site, shown only under Farmers markets, because many of its listings are years old and it does not give days, hours or season here. Either list can miss a market, and markets can be seasonal.
- Restaurants are left out. USDA's SNAP data also lists Restaurant Meals Program restaurants. This page leaves them out, because only certain households, in the states that run the program, can use SNAP there.
- United States and its territories only. A place name from another country may match a U.S. place with the same name.
- Not listed: WIC vendors, school meals and senior meal programs.
- Territories. The Food Access Research Atlas covers the 50 states and DC only. Puerto Rico, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands use separate nutrition assistance programs instead of SNAP, so few or no SNAP stores are listed there.
- Straight-line distances. All distances are straight-line ("as the crow flies"), not travel distance by road or transit.
- Tracts, not households. Atlas flags describe a whole census tract, not any one household or block.

Every list shows its own data date from the source. Nothing on this page is cached from elsewhere or filled in when a source fails.
